DJOU: “THE TIME FOR CHANGE HAS COME”

From http://djou.house.gov/

Washington, DC — Congressman Charles K. Djou (HI-01) issued the following statement after House Republicans formally unveiled their “Pledge to America”--a new governing agenda focused on the top priorities of their constituents. The full agenda can be accessed HERE.

“The American people want, and our economy needs, more private sector jobs, not more public sector programs.

“The Pledge to America answers this call. The pledge presents bold solutions, renews a commitment to our nation’s founding principles and offers a new way of doing business in Washington. Many of the principles and policies expressed in the pledge have been the foundation of my career in elected office.

“To spur job creation, we need to end the current economic uncertainty for small businesses by publicly announcing that this Congress will not raise taxes and by making our nation more globally competitive through free trade agreements.

“We also need to rein in our spending and reduce our budget deficits to combat the massive national debt that threatens the prosperity and security of our children.

“Finally, we need greater transparency in the legislative process. Cutting backroom deals and drafting legislation in the dark of night are bad for the American people and bad for democracy.

“In short, we need to change the status quo in Congress.

“Indeed, what we have seen in Congress is anathema to principles of fiscal responsibility and government accountability. The majority in Congress has pursued a reckless agenda of ‘spend to no end.’ Congress has compounded the problem by refusing to pass a budget for the first time in modern American history and by failing to pass any appropriations bills, even though we are days from the start of the new fiscal year for the federal government.

“It’s clear to voters around the country and in our islands that we are spending too much money on programs that are not working and that we have no plan to pay the money back. We will simply pass the bill to our nation’s children. This is wrong. This needs to change. The time for change has come.”

Background:

The Pledge is the culmination of a months-long engagement with the American people through which House Republicans asked the people to express their ideas and share their priorities for Congress.  The Pledge offers concrete solutions that can be immediately implemented to tackle the issues that are most important to the nation, including job creation, spending restraint, national security, health care, and government reform.

Congressman Djou strives to maintain the highest levels of availability, accessibility and accountability to the people of Hawaii’s First Congressional District. He held talk stories (both in the district and on the phone), organized the First Congressional District Job Fair, visited dozens of local businesses and held a district open house. He also regularly holds coffee hours in his Honolulu and DC offices.
