Bills Signed: HB961 and HB391

News release from House Democratic Caucus, May 25, 2021

On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, Governor David Ige signed into law:

HB961 (Act 18), streamlines the process to obtain a temporary license for a military spouse in good standing with another state – allowing Hawaiʻi to tap qualified professionals to fill positions where there are shortages, such as social workers, counselors, and physicians.

HB391 (Act 19) allows service-members to terminate a residential rental agreement without penalty if the service-member is ordered to move to on-post government quarters; opening up housing opportunities to our Hawaiʻi civilian residents.

Statement by Majority Leader Della Au Belatti on Governors Bill Signing of HB961 and HB391:

Today, the House is pleased to see Governor David Ige sign two bills into law related to our military community. These bills recognize the important contributions made to our community and challenges faced by military families. In particular, HB 961 (Act 18) provide work opportunities to military spouses while simultaneously adding to the State's pool of qualified and experienced candidates for employment in critical workforce shortage areas, particularly in the healthcare arena.
