UH Mānoa campus reawakening expected for next academic year

This message was shared with the students, faculty and staff of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on March 29, 2021.

Aloha UH Mānoa ʻohana,

I am very excited to provide this update to the upcoming 2021–22 academic year that officially starts August 23 for our students. Our world was turned upside down just over a year ago by the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread disruption it caused, including the closing of our campus. The future has brightened significantly with the progress of vaccine distribution in Hawaiʻi and the country.

Barring any unforeseen setbacks, the upcoming academic year will see the reopening of our beautiful campus and its amenities. For our faculty and students, this upcoming fall 2021 semester will be a transition semester, as we reopen our campus and navigate from a primarily online environment towards a primarily in-person semester in/by spring 2022.

As we approach the start of registration for the fall, 2021 semester, 62% of our courses will be offered completely online, and 19% will be offered only in-person. The hybrid format comprises 11% of our courses, which affords students with the possibility of participating both in- person and online. The remaining 8% of our courses will be offered in a variety of modalities, and students will be able to choose among fully in-person, fully online, hybrid, or—using one of our 75 newly-equipped classrooms—the “Here-or-There” modality in which students can elect to be online or in person with the same faculty member.

We believe that our approach will ensure that our students will learn in a safe, flexible, and stimulating environment, inspired and informed by the world-class research, scholarship, and creative work of our faculty and reinforced by stellar support services.

We anticipate that there will be plenty of activity on campus, possibly more than in recent years, as UH Mānoa has seen a surge in enrollment despite the pandemic. The more than 120 clubs and organizations for students can begin meeting and gathering in person once more, and the amazing research opportunities for undergraduate students will continue. We will also begin hosting football games on campus for the very first time ever, in addition to the usual athletic events, performances and campus events.

We anticipate that there may be setbacks, but as our amazing students, faculty and staff have proven, we have the ability to be flexible and adapt to changes beyond our control. As the health and safety of our campus ʻohana remains paramount, we will continue to follow basic COVID-19 guidelines including face coverings, daily health checks and physical distancing–a small price to pay to reopen our campus. I look forward to seeing the campus filled with students moving confidently forward on their academic journeys—learning, living and making the most of the exciting opportunities that UH Mānoa has to offer!

Mahalo nui loa,
Michael Bruno
UH Mānoa Provost
