Volunteers Plan Massive State Clean-Up

OAHU – Over 4,000 volunteers will fan out on May 8th across Oahu as part of a herculean effort to renew and beautify 47 city and state parks throughout the island as part of the ‘Mormon Helping Hands’ program.  In all, 6,500 volunteers throughout the state plan to clean-up a total of 81 parks in this one-day effort.

Those familiar with the program most often associate it with emergency response operations such as Hurricane Katrina and most recently the earthquake in Haiti, but disaster relief is only half of the story.

“While Church members are consistently involved in some manner of community service in our daily lives, this is an opportunity for all of our congregations in Hawaii to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to concentrate our efforts in one area – our parks,” said Hawaii Area Seventy Scott Whiting.”  “Church members both old and young will perform a variety of work depending on the needs of the park.  For some parks, it will involve beach cleanup, landscape maintenance, raking, and trash cleanup, while on Maui, volunteers will be painting playground equipment, building rock walls and doing various repairs.”

Of the 6,500 volunteers, organizers anticipate 1,500 volunteers from Maui, Lanai and Molokai, roughly 1,000 from the Island of Hawaii, and 150 from Kauai.

“Mayor Hannemann has put a high priority on improving our City parks. We always welcome and encourage volunteers to help us beautify and maintain them. Public-private partnerships are key components of Mayor Hannemann’s administration,” said Les Chang, Director of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation.  “During these economically challenging times, we especially appreciate volunteers stepping up to the plate and lending a hand in making our parks a welcoming place for everyone.”

‘Mormon Helping Hands’ was officially organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1998, when the Church asked South American Church leaders to establish an annual day of service.  Since then, hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world collectively donate millions of hours of service to their communities.

In just a decade, ‘Mormon Helping Hands’ has spread to every corner of the world. Large-scale service projects have been completed from South America to North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa, where, in 2007, 100,000 volunteers worked together in a continent-wide “Mormon Helping Hands” project to clean up their communities.
