“Making Honolulu Age-Friendly – An Action Plan” finalized and available for public comment

News Release from City and County of Honolulu March 30, 2015

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced that Making Honolulu Age-Friendly – An Action Plan has been finalized and is being released today for public comment for 30 days.

In 2013, Mayor Caldwell nominated Honolulu to join the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and AARP National’s Network of Age-Friendly Communities.  Making Honolulu age-friendly means creating an inclusive and accessible environment that encourages active and healthy aging from kupuna to keiki.

Honolulu’s Age-Friendly Cities Initiative commenced in 2013 with formation of a Steering Committee, followed by a Technical Committee and Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC).  The CAC was comprised of approximately 90 prominent members of the community, including representatives from the City and County Departments, for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, advocates from diverse communities and the academic community.  The University of Hawaii Center on Aging was selected as the consultant by the Steering Committee and worked with the CAC and focus groups in developing an Action Plan.  A preview of the Action Plan was presented to over 500 attendees at the Living Age-Friendly Summit held on February 7, 2015 at the Japanese Cultural Center.  At the Summit, Mayor Caldwell promised to make the Honolulu Action Plan available to the general public for review and comment.

Making Honolulu Age-Friendly – An Action Plan is now available at www.KupunaToKeiki.com.  Please note that the file is large and may take several minutes to download to your computer.  Mayor Caldwell encourages all those interested in learning more about Honolulu becoming an Age-Friendly City to read the Action Plan and provide comments as follows:
