Deconstruction of Maunakea telescope set to begin

Ikaika Anderson Owned and Operated by Pro-Rail Super PAC

CB: … A political group with ties to the construction industry and a history of running attack ads has launched a full-court press this year to sway voters in the race for lieutenant governor.

Be Change Now, a super PAC funded by contractors who do business with the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters, is spending more than $2 million this year supporting Ikaika Anderson’s run for lieutenant governor with radio, digital and newspaper ads, according to recently filed campaign spending reports.

That’s double what the same super PAC spent to help elect Josh Green as LG in 2018. That amount also includes about $332,000 spent running attack ads targeting one of Anderson’s opponents, Rep. Sylvia Luke.

Recent polls have shown Luke is slightly ahead of other Democrats in the race, although a majority of voters are still undecided….

Be Change Now, which grew out of a pro-rail super PAC created by the Pacific Resource Partnership in 2012, has spent upwards of $3.7 million this year, including supporting other Hawaii candidates in other races.

The ads are seen as political payback for a financial bailout package for the Honolulu rail project that Luke helped shepherd through the Legislature. PRP lobbied for a permanent extension to the tax surcharge on Oahu residents. Luke and other lawmakers instead passed a measure that only extended that surcharge until 2030.

The ads don’t mention rail, rather they attempt to connect Luke to indicted Hawaii defense contractor Martin Kao….

Trial pushed back for former Honolulu city officials charged with conspiracy

KITV: … The federal trial for three former City and County of Honolulu officials is now pushed back to next February. Donna Leong, Max Sword, and Roy Amemiya are charged with conspiracy.

In federal court on Thursday afternoon, Judge Leslie Kobayashi agreed to continue the jury trial to February 6 after the defense attorneys asked for more time to prepare for the trial, citing continuing challenges with obtaining discovery. The trial had previously been scheduled to start on October 31 of this year.

Leong is the former city Corporation Counsel, Sword is the former Honolulu Police Commission chair, and Amemiya is the former city managing director….

Board of Water Supply detects petroleum contamination in Moanalua Valley monitoring well

SA: … The monitoring well was installed to check for the possible presence and migration of contaminants in the groundwater and does not mean that Oahu’s drinking water system is contaminated. The BWS said that it had met with the Hawaii Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and that there is agreement that the low levels detected are not expected to pose a health hazard….

CB: The water utility said it detected petroleum contamination beyond the military’s Red Hill property.

No charges will be made against officers involved in Kaka’ako shooting

CB: … The standoff began at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 27, when Brandon Ventura called 911 from his 15th-floor Kamakee Vista apartment at 1065 Kawaiahao Street.

“He said his girlfriend had broken up with him, and he had a loaded gun to his head,” Alm said during a press conference.

Alm also said that Ventura told the operator he hadn’t taken his medications that day, and the operator informed him that help was on its way….

Alm explained that three people who knew Ventura personally tried to talk him down, including a bar manager who had been staying at Ventura’s apartment, a friend from their time at Leeward Community College and a police sergeant who’d been friends with Ventura’s father for over three decades….

Ventura refused to drop the pistol, and at some point during the struggle its barrel pointed toward the SWAT officer’s face, causing another officer to shoot Ventura once in the head, killing him, Alm said….

Woke Mob Targets ‘Chinaman’s Hat’ (again)

AAN: … For many of Hawaii’s 200,000+ residents of Chinese heritage, the use of the slur “Chinaman” is analogous to the use of the N-word to refer to African Americans. The use of the C-word is unacceptable, and as the colloquial name for Mokoli’i Island, runs counter to Hawaii’s respect for ethnic diversity and spirit of aloha….
