How Did Police Commission Miss Zane Logan Problem?

SA Editorial: … >> Why was Zane Logan’s arrest initially concealed from the public? Was a veil against public transparency already going up, even before Joe Logan was sworn in?

>> If the Honolulu Police Commission was unaware, as it claims, that Zane Logan had more than 40 prior arrests and citations since 2004 for various crimes, just how thorough was the vetting process that led to Joe Logan becoming chief? This was a long-awaited selection that included delays and a jobs consultant — so it is stunning if Logan wasn’t asked, or wasn’t forthcoming, about any crime- related family skeletons….

Public housing dispute over $1B redevelopment raises accusations of lavish spending

HNN: …The nasty financial divorce over the $1 billion redevelopment of the Mayor Wright Housing project is flaring up with accusations of lavish spending.

… In reports presented at board meetings, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority said that after it terminated its agreement with Hunt Companies in 2020, it found a number of questionable expenditures that Hunt tried to pass off to the agency — and ultimately to taxpayers.

According to the HPHA, it included:
  • $800 in prime rib dinners for employees, complete with fine wines and whiskey
  • Nearly $500,000 in disputed fees paid to a construction firm;
  • and improper mileage reimbursements of $2 for employees’ travel from Hunt’s downtown offices to the HPHA’s Kalihi headquarters.

Hunt said they spent more than $4 million of its own money on the project and that the contract was unjustly terminated….

With the demise of the deal with Hunt, the state is now looking to build affordable rentals and leasehold apartments….

Perpetrators, not Victims: Hardened Criminal Homeless behind crime in Waikiki

HNN: …  Speaking on a town hall meeting on safety in Waikiki, Alm said many of the crimes are being committed by repeat offenders.

“We have tried to identify those thieves who are like stealing from stores in Waikiki blind. They go in there daily to steal things,” he said.

Waikiki resident and former journalist John Deutzman said many of these repeat offenders are terrorizing his neighborhood between the Waikiki police substation and Kapahulu Avenue.

“Sixty-three percent of the people arrested are what I call chronic offenders who have a real problem with behaving themselves,” he said.

“Forty-two are convicted felons. And some of them are very dangerous people with very dangerous rap sheets.”

The increase in crime also coincides with a rise in homelessness.

According to the nonprofit Partners In Care, the number of homeless people in Waikiki and other East Honolulu neighborhoods rose from 424 in 2020 to 575 this year….
