Legislative committee pursuing investigation against state Rep. Sharon Har

KITV: … A special House committee has decided to continue investigating whether state representative Sharon Har should face legislative sanctions for her drunken driving arrest nearly a year ago.

Just last week, House Speaker Scott Saiki said the special committee likely would not pursue punishment against Har.

But the committee held a hearing today laying out a timetable for the probe, and indicated it is working to complete the investigation by end of the legislative session in May….

"I simply cannot understand this obsession with perpetuating this case," said Har's attorney Howard Luke.

(Luke earlier claimed that Har did not know that Beretania was a one-way street even though the Capitol Building fronts onto Beretania.)

Representative Della Au Belatti told KITV4 despite Saiki's comments, it is the committee's duty to complete its work. If the committee determines Har behaved inappropriately, it could censure, suspend or expel her from the Legislature….

Nobody Likes a Rat: Legislators Claim they are Redirecting Choy Donations

SA: … Milton J. Choy, owner of H2O Process Systems and Fluid Technologies, donated $160,150 to more than 50 state and county lawmakers since 2014 and received nearly $6 million in government contracts. The total includes $56,850 given to the campaigns of current state senators and $20,600 to active House members.

The House members are forfeiting any donations from Choy to the Campaign Spending Commission or giving it to the nonprofit Criminal Justice Action Network, according to state House Finance Chairwoman Sylvia Luke. CJAN is a student-run organization at Columbia Law School in New York.

On the Senate side, Choy’s donations will be going to the Campaign Spending Commission.

“We do not condone illegal actions that have recently occurred. In lieu of returning Milton Choy’s campaign contribution directly to him, we will be redirecting his donations to the Campaign Spending Commission,” read a joint statement from state Sens. Donovan Dela Cruz, Ron Kouchi, Gil Keith-Agaran, Clarence Nishihara, Michelle Kidani, Roz Baker, Stanley Chang, Maile Shimabukuro, Dru Kanuha, Lynn DeCoite, Glenn Wakai, Lorraine Inouye and Karl Rhoads.

Dela Cruz, chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, organized the redirection of campaign contributions to the commission.

Luke, who is running for lieutenant governor, appeared on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s “Spotlight Hawaii” livestream program Friday and addressed the U.S. Department of Justice investigation and Choy’s dealings.

Luke said her campaign treasurer is reviewing contribution records to capture any donations from Choy and his business associates, and will donate the money to the Campaign Spending Commission for use in investigating campaign spending violations, according to a news release from her campaign….

Navy completes flushing of zones taking one step closer to allowing military families to return home

KHON: … The Navy says families have been able to return home and about half of the families in housing areas decided to stay, but residents have questions about that.

“In the 12 block radius that we walk, I can smell fuel coming out of the several homes emitting the fumes, just like my house,” Simic said.

The Navy says it reached a milestone this week with flushing of homes in 19 zones completed.

“The team completed the validation of several of those neighborhoods or one in particular the Red Hill neighborhood and is currently completing a second validation for another neighborhood as we speak,” said Capt. Darren Guenther, Navy Region Hawaii Chief of Staff.

The Hawaii Department of Health has the final say on giving the green light to consume the water again. As of Friday, the DOH has not lifted that health advisory yet….
