More than 500 soldiers in camouflage uniforms were arrayed at historic Palm Circle in a 9/11 remembrance ceremony that included a moment of silence, a single bagpiper's rendition of "Amazing Grace," taps, a cannon salute and the lowering of the American flag.

Lt. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, the commander of the U.S. Army in the Pacific, recognized the contributions of American service members in the ensuing War on Terror, some of whom have served five or more times in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"These warriors and their families have made numerous sacrifices to preserve and defend the freedom and liberty for America and her allies," Mixon told those assembled. "And many of the brave warriors who answered their nation's call have paid the ultimate sacrifice, while many others bear the psychological and physical scars of war."

Mixon added that, "Ours has been a longer fight than World War II, but we are making progress." He noted the change in mission in Iraq from one of combat to stability operations.

Abercrombie campaigners sentences for Governor’s office sit-in

The group conducted the sit-in over several days in hopes of convincing ~~Gov. Linda Lingle~~ (you) to ~~end~~ (believe) furloughs (were caused by Lingle and not the criminal BoE/DoE/HSTA) ~~that gave Hawaii the shortest instructional calendar in the nation last school year — 163 days instead of the normal 180 days~~. (They did this in order to improve Abercrombie’s chances against Aiona Nov 2.)

Civil Beat Robo-Poll says 30% of conservatives support hippie from Buffalo

It is simply not credible that 30% of self described conservatives would vote for Abercrombie. The only reasonable argument for this would be strategic voting. But strategic voting has never been shown to have any substantial impact on an election. This poll is starting to look like the bogus April, 2010 National Democrat polls which showed Ed Case beating Colleen Hanabusa. It is manufactured by the progressives to give the appearance of momentum. It is likely the race is much closer.

Hannemann camp questions validity of poll

Hannemann's camp questioned the validity of the poll.

"As for the Civil Beat poll, it is an automated voice recording that asks people to push buttons on their telephone. There's no screening for registered voters or people who are likely to pull a democratic ballot. We don't know who likely responded. We don't know who hung up," said Hannemann campaign spokesperson Carolyn Tanaka.

Civil beat hired a company called Merriman River Group to conduct the poll. Merriman executive director Matt Fitch told Hawaii News Now his poll is not only credible, but its margin of error is just 2.75%.

"It was incredibly accurate the first time it was used in Hawaii in May for the special congressional election," Fitch said. (Yes, but your poll in May included the Republican candidate. Duh.)

Unions having hard time speaking with single voice

Today, the usually straight-up face of labor in Hawaii is remarkably divided in both its gubernatorial endorsements as public and private sector unions split between Neil Abercrombie and Mufi Hannemann.

Even more telling in this exquisitely close election is the division within two of the big name unions: ILWU and HGEA.

Hawaii has a lot going for it, according to U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter: a unified college system, a single statewide school district and a spirit of collaboration when it comes to education issues….

A central concern for the participants Friday was a projection from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce that 65 percent of all jobs in Hawaii will require a postsecondary degree by 2018. How to address that growing need for college graduates provoked discussion throughout the day.

Party Chairman Dante Carpenter confirmed yesterday a formal complaint had been filed against Okino stemming from e-mails sent by the outgoing City Council member that endorsed some GOP candidates…. (Suddenly they want to enforce the rules.)

In an e-mail last week, Okino sent out a list of endorsements to counter recommendations of the Democratic Party of Hawaii's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered caucus. Okino endorsed Democrats and Republicans based on whether they are against abortion and civil unions, urging people to vote based on religion.

His endorsements included Cam Cavasso, a Republican, over U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii; U.S. Rep. Charles Djou, R-Hawaii, over state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa; and GOP state House candidate Julia Allen over House Speaker Calvin Say.

Slaves worked at A&B too: Kaua‘i Coffee linked to human-trafficking lawsuit

Kaua‘i Coffee signed two agreements with Global Horizons, one on Sept. 14, 2004, and the other on June 15, 2005. Pursuant to the agreements, Global Horizons provided Kaua‘i Coffee with farm workers from Thailand between November 2004 and June 2006.

Between 2006 and 2009, 17 farm workers filed discrimination charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, naming Kaua‘i Coffee as their employer.

Military training should be prohibited on the former Kulani prison property, but a quasi-military program for at-risk teens and an expanded conservation area allowed.

(This is due to the effort of Big Island anti-Americans who sent in comments opposing any military training at the site. As a result BI Nat’l Guard will have to fly to Oahu for many training exercises. And that is not all. Three “people” are calling for a contested case hearing over the Youth Challenge Academy. YCA allows students who have been failed by the DoE the opportunity to get a real education and pass their GED. After decades of crying “schools, not prisons” the “progressives” who said nothing about the prison are suddenly crying about the school. it is just anti-military obstructionism. Nothing more.)

North Hawaii hospital CEO White quits; second to step down in 2 years

North Hawaii Community Hospital CEO John White has called it quits after only 18 months on the job, claiming he might not be the best person to lead the hospital forward.

White came to Waimea from Moses Lake, Wash., in April 2009, replacing Jeff Comer, who had spent only two months working for the hospital before resigning in the summer of 2008. Comer initiated a round of layoffs at the hospital that prompted public outcry and questioning of hospital management.

"(The hospital has) done much better in all different dimensions, but anytime you're in a situation like North Hawaii was at the end of 2008 ... some of the work you have to do in a turnaround is not the same work you do once you crawl out of that hole," White said. "There's different skills you need from turnaround to what's next. ... It's a question of fit. It's not good or bad either way."
