COVID Cures Flu in Hawaii:  Only 5 Flu Cases – Flu Deaths drop from 227 to Zero

KITV: … Cold and flu season normally runs from November to May. And the state Department of Health reports that so far, there have been only five confirmed cases of influenza-A in Hawaii and no flu-related deaths.

COVID-19 is a factor in more ways than one. First off, when someone has cold or flu symptoms, physicians may not be looking for influenza….

During a five-week period last winter, the DOH reported 26 flu clusters with more than 5,000 confirmed cases. There were also 227 deaths (IN 5 WEEKS) related to complications from pneumonia or the flu….

Miscovich said there’s still a chance to flu cases to rise if more students return to in-classroom learning, because the virus often spreads easily in school settings….

51-50 News: Caldwell believes he could win governor’s race in 2022

HNN: … “I will have a difficult run for governor, no doubt about it, but I again I think I can get the votes to win,” said Caldwell.

“I’m looking at it seriously. People will recognize that part of leadership is getting into the ring, taking the hits, not ducking, running away and making a difference and I think I have,” he added.

With the public sentiment soured because of the pandemic crisis, rail and other issues, does he have a chance? …

swearing and outbursts by the public became part of his outdoor press conferences.  “You fascist,” yelled one man….

Come 2022, his likely gubernatorial opponent will be Lt. Governor Josh Green.

“As a medical doctor, he’s done a great job messaging that only an MD can do, and I think his reporting has been very helpful to the community,” said Caldwell….

Caldwell’s second term ends at noon Saturday. He says he’ll fish….

UPW staffing shortage at Halawa Correctional Facility

KITV: … The Department of Public Safety reports that it is continuing to actively look at all options to help Halawa Correctional Facility through its staffing shortage, which includes temporarily reassigning adult corrections officers from other Oahu facilities to assist HCF.

According to the Department of Public Safety it recently moved eight emergency hires and has also temporarily dispatched several staff from other Oahu facilities to alleviate the strain on Halawa staff. The emergency hires reported to the facility two weeks ago. Sheriffs are also assisting with perimeter security.

PSD says it is proud of and grateful to the staff who have stepped up to help Halawa.

According to PSD each correctional facility is dealing with unique situations, including short-staffing…

PSD has confirmed that "contractually essential security posts have to be filled, which requires holding over some employees to work longer shifts in order to maintain adequate coverage of the essential posts." PSD acknowledges that this is a challenge, but says OCCC is addressing all mandatory post requirements and working hard to maintain operations.  …

The correctional staff are part of Phase 1B which is underway. It is currently coordinating the staff vaccination schedule. According to the State Vaccination Plan, inmates will be included in the next phase.

(IDEA: Inoculate only those criminals who failed to infect themselves with COVID.)

Lt. Gov. Green: Huge spike in cases due to delay in processing tests

KHON: … Cases are up more than 35% since Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency COVID-19 dashboard. The number of new COVID cases increased every day this week.

  • Monday, Dec. 28: 46 new cases
  • Tuesday, Dec. 29: 76 new cases
  • Wednesday, Dec. 30: 108 new cases
  • Thursday, Dec. 31: 188 new cases
  • Friday, Jan. 1: 244 new cases

It is not as bad as some may think, according to Green.

“This is a result of having more test results come in,” he said. “And it’s a little bit uneven over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday, especially this year, because it falls on Friday.”

He said, fewer people got tested over Christmas and there was a two-to-four-day delay in processing results due to the holiday.
