Debate: Hannemann hammered over negative mailer

SA: Lingle and Inouye criticize Hannemann campaign flier

Shapiro: “Hannemann spent much of tonight’s televised debate, which may be the most important of the campaign, defending the mailer and expressing “regret” to those it may have offended….

Inouye, who expresses a strong preference for positive campaigning, deserves credit for taking a leadership role in trying to get this election that is so vital to the Democratic Party and the state on a more productive track. He’s hosting a unity event today at Washington Middle School, with Hannemann and Abercrombie both invited.

The controversy has clearly given the Abercrombie campaign a lift, and it’ll be interesting to see if it changes Hannemann’s plans for the last month of campaign, when he’s been expected to use his big lead in funding to launch a major advertising blitz, including a fair amount of negative advertising.

DePledge: Inouye: “I would have to say that the best campaigning, the cleanest, as far as I now, is Hawaii when you compare with the rest of the nation,” he said.

“In Hawaii they get sensitive about you putting out a brochure saying `My wife was born here. Your wife was born there.’ That’s soft in other places. The kind of stuff that they put out in their brochures? `Whew!’”

Debate: Hannemann blames others for Kalihi tax hikes

Longtime residents are seeing their property fees quadruple. But Hannemann says, as Mayor, he had nothing to do with it. (Uh huh)

"Once again, Mr. Hannemann never takes responsibility when something goes wrong. He blames others. Now it's Mr. Cachola. It's the City Council, when the plain fact of the matter is this happened during the Hannemann Administration. Either he knew about it and approved of it or he didn't know about it. And his whole campaign is based on executive experience and competence. If that's an example of competence, I leave you to be the judge," said Abercrombie.

No matter who's to blame, about 250 homeowners on Oahu, including Kalihi, are still stuck with a massive bill.

Among those affected is 89-year-old Rosita Macabeo. Her bill went up from $2400 last year, to nearly $12,000 this year.

Hannemann still waffles on Civil Unions

Hannemann said the more important question is not civil unions but whether he or Abercrombie would legalize same-sex marriage.

"I stand unalterably opposed to same-sex marriages. I believe it's sacrosanct between a man and a woman," he said. "But obviously I'm willing to work with the legislators to ensure that we end discrimination, that we extend benefits to gay couples that are not in the institution of marriage.

"But that's where I sort of draw the line. And I think that's a relevant question to ask."

HNN profiles Duke Aiona

HNN: VIDEO

As a judge Aiona built the Drug Court program. As a human being he tries to build lives.

"It's easier to build strong children than it is to fix broken adults. I think about that daily," he said.

"He's the type of person that you can really talk to. He comes right to the point," Waikiki resident Grecia Hill said.

"This campaign has always been about grassroots and just the identification I think I have with everyday working families," Aiona said.

Between now and the General Election, Aiona will work his campaign game plan the way he worked a sideline coaching kid's soccer and jayvee basketball -- play hard and give it all you've got.

"We don't own anything, really, when it comes down to it. We are just stewards of everything that we have and we have to be good stewards in everything," he said.

Political experts said Aiona needs votes from Republicans, independents, and moderate Democrats to carry him to victory.

Gay Palimony Suit Filed In Hawaii: Lesbian Couple Fights Over Assets

“All I want is what married people would have if it happened to them,” Gibeault told KITV.

Gibeault said a younger woman came between her and her partner, ending a relationship in which she depended on her partner’s income and retirement plans.

Gibeault said she even gave up her cabinetry business to care for her partner's aging parents. So, she said she was stunned by both the break-up and her sudden poverty. She said she pointed out to her partner that she owned none of the assets they’d accumulated as a couple.

“She said ‘Well, sorry. Everything's mine. My name’s on it’," Gibeault remembers.

(This case can be used by the Hawaii Judiciary to make HB444 law.)

Hospital governors meet in secret to discuss taxpayer loans to Alii Health Center

The West Hawaii Regional Board, comprised of area physicians and other community members, convened the special meeting at the last minute, to respond to a resolution, issued by the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. Board, that apparently instructed the regional board members to discuss the future of the Alii Health Center clinic. West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday the clinic faced closure or being combined with Kona Community Hospital, after hospital officials and board members authorized, then forgave, the bulk of about $2.9 million in loans to the clinic.

Sources told West Hawaii Today some board members are concerned about the legality of the loans….

Kona Community Hospital and Alii Health Clinic officials have often stressed the separation of the hospital and the clinic, which the hospital helped create, but which then became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Financial documents West Hawaii Today obtained this week showed a series of loans going back several years, from the hospital to the clinic. The clinic would make nominal loan payments of about $3,500, then thousands more would be forgiven.

(If the clinic becomes part of the hospital, then the clinic employees become HGEA members)

Bedbugs Challenge Homeless Shelters

HONOLULU -- No one really likes to talk about bed bugs, but it is a fact of life for those who manage homeless shelters in Hawaii.

“We run into it fairly frequently, maybe once a month or so,” said Connie Mitchell of the Institute of Human Services.

(There only one pesticide which will eliminate bedbugs.  DDT.  Be sure to thank an environmentalist for allowing bedbugs to make a comeback.   And allowing malaria to kill millions of people every year.)

Kauai County plans to refile 32 counts of incest

Defense attorney Craig De Costa accused County Prosecutor Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho of prosecutorial misconduct by telling the grand jury that indicted Bray that the counts were for the same charge, incest.

De Costa argued the instruction effectively denied Bray due process, because each count against him must be considered separately. Watanabe agreed.  (Anything for the defense bar.)

The judge on Wednesday also let stand 34 counts of sexual assault against Bray.
