DPP: Anti-Monster Home Hysteria based on Lies and Ignorance

SA: … There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to these large detached dwellings, aka, monster homes. I’d like to clear up a few of them.

Some houses may have just started construction, but their building permits were obtained much earlier, before new regulations took effect.

No building permits have been issued for new large detached dwellings since the moratorium (Ordinance 18-6), and final regulations (Ordinance 19-3) were adopted.

In the past nine years, fewer than 1% of the single-family homes built on Oahu were considered large detached dwellings.

Since the permitted size of the house is tied to the size of the property, there will still be rather large houses on larger lots. On a 5,000-square-foot lot, the maximum amount of floor area is 3,500 square feet. On a 15,000 square-foot lot, the home can be as large as 10,500 square feet, as long as other requirements, such as parking, are met.

Looks can be deceiving; what looks like one large house, may actually be an approved duplex, or a main house with an attached ohana unit, or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Also, some of these large structures are actually built on land zoned for uses other than single-family residential. The infamous Date Street dwelling, for example, was built on apartment- zoned land and could have been higher, or featured more units, than what was approved….

(DPP can tell you this now because the objective—reducing affordable housing construction—has been achieved.  Thank you for being another lemming.  Enjoy your one-way trip over the cliff to Las Vegas.)

Crime Wave Caused by use of Parole and Probation

KHON: … Troy Salas had been granted probation instead of stiff jail time, before he was accused of driving at a police officer at a traffic stop earlier this month.

“Everybody needs a second chance, but when they’re on probation and they have like 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5. They keep getting violations. I mean we need to stop this,” said acting Honolulu Prosecutor Dwight Nadamoto (without even snickering)….

KHON2 also asked about the arrests in serious cases that go on to be RPI or released pending investigation — such as Victor Gascon, who sheriffs took into custody in September in connection with an airport area carjacking. He was RPI, until police caught him this month after an hours-long manhunt in Waipahu. Police say he tried to steal a car at gunpoint.

KHON2 asked the state attorney general — which handles charges for sheriff arrests — why he was still out without charges since his state-authority arrest in september for UEMV, kidnapping and first-degree robbery?

The AG spokesperson told us they are still investigating “the crime and extent of the victim’s injuries. The additional investigation is necessary to determine the appropriate charge, and is continuing.”…

(And that’s why we have a crime wave.)

Because Feds on Job, Suspect is Held Without Bail instead of being ‘Released Pending Investigation’

HNN: … A federal judge made that ruling Monday. The judge ordered Glenn Muth of Mililani to remain behind bars (instead of being ‘released pending investigation’) after he allegedly stole property worth more than $60,000.

The items stolen included a mine detector, four utility vehicles, a trailer and military tool kits.

Muth is also charged with drug trafficking and multiple firearm offenses tied to a burglary in Waialua….

In Between Grand Jury Appearances, Nadamoto finds time to form campaign committee

SA: … Acting Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Nadamoto informed the state Campaign Spending Commission on Friday that he organized a campaign committee, a strong indication that he might dive into the 2020 election for the four-year job.

Nadamoto would join U.S. Attorney and state Judge Steve Alm, who has the highest profile among the handful of previously announced candidates, as well as onetime Deputy Prosecutor Megan Kau, former Deputy Prosecutor R.J. Brown and Deputy Public Defender Jacquelyn Esser.

Nadamoto has served as Honolulu’s acting prosecuting attorney since March when Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro went on  paid leave from his $176,688-a-year job following the call by state Attorney General Clare Connors and Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard for him to step down when he was notified that he was a target of a federal investigation into government corruption.…

Nadamoto, a deputy prosecutor for 16 years, was named first deputy in December 2018 after First Deputy Prosecutor Chasid Sapolu put himself on leave….

Hawaii’s Doctor Exodus Grew In 2019

CB: … Roughly 150 doctors left Hawaii this year because of the high cost of living, lack of educational opportunities for their children and other factors, according to the latest annual Hawaii Physician Workforce Assessment.

The exodus represents about 5% of the 3,000 full-time physicians who work in the islands.

Doctors also left their practices here to care for their ill and aging parents on the mainland and because of lower pay, lower reimbursement and poor job market for their spouses, said Dr. Kelley Withy, who authored the report….

There have been some improvements in specialty coverage, Withy said.

“We used to have a severe shortage of cardiologists appearing on the top of the shortage list on Oahu, but that has eased somewhat because heart specialists are now being trained locally through a fellowship established by the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and The Queen’s Medical Center,” said Withy. “Similarly, the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency program has eased the shortage of family medicine doctors there.”…

Turning Around An Oahu Rural Hospital

CB: … Over the next two years the hospital is embarking on a two-year plan based on the community health needs it identified in 2018, including improved access to mental and behavioral health services and finding avenues to assist patients’ access to affordable specialty care….

It’s also looking to hire a contracted psychologist for the hospital, provide space for Medicaid outreach workers…

The hospital submitted a proposal to the Hawaii Department of Health to lease its space for psychiatric and substance abuse services….

As an additional source of income, it’s been a long-standing practice for the hospital to lease out business space to specialty providers. In January, Windward Orthopedics will use space a few times a month to offer rehabilitative orthopedic services.

That extra space could be used for substance abuse and mental health programming, he added….

Kahele Campaign Co-Chair Neil Abercrombie calls on Tulsi Gabbard to resign from Congress

SA: … Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie is calling on Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to resign from her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, telling reporters today that her missed votes and absence from her district were “unacceptable.”

Abercrombie is a co-chair of State Sen. Kai Kahele’s campaign to claim Gabbard’s House seat…. (Kiss of death.)
