Senator: Lets Build a Massive Festering Homeless Tent City Downtown Where There’s Lots of Copper

HNN: Just above the HPD parking garage, there are several acres of green space.

State Sen. Will Espero says it's the perfect spot for a temporary homeless safe zone.

"There should be a place that the homeless can go where they won't be harassed," said Espero, whose district includes Ewa Beach and Ocean Pointe. "Where they won't be pushed out and most importantly where we can give them resources."…

Under a proposal under consideration, the new safe zone would be modeled after one Big Island Mayor Harry Kim started in August.

(See how this kind of stupidity spreads?)

Morishige still has doubts about safe zones because of failures decades ago.

"There are some concerns about tent encampments," he said. "When they've been tried in the past some have had to be shut down for health and safety reasons. One example was in Aala Park in the 1990s under Mayor Fasi's administration."

Next week, Morishige will travel to the Big Island for a first-hand look at the safe zone in Kona….

(Clue: Any homeless shelter which does not put the homeless in hard-walled structures with a real roof, floor, and door is just moving the problem from one place to another.  The difference between the ‘igloos’ and tents is that in an igloo the homeless can actually stay clean after a shower, sleep 8 hours and be secure from theft or attack.  Without these improvements, mental health recovery is impossible.)

41 Tons of Trash Removed from Pearl City Homeless Camp

KHON: …“Before we could begin enforcement, we had to remove nine truckloads of literal trash that had been accumulated by the people that were encamped here,” said Ross Sasamura, director of the city Department of Facility Maintenance. “Phase one, we removed about 35 cubic yards of metals. We removed 82,000 pounds of trash and debris and we removed 43 shopping carts just from the area between Blaisdell Park, Hekaha Place, and Lehua Avenue.”…

Solar Panels About to Get More Expensive

PBN: …The U.S. International Trade Commission agreed with the complaint of two U.S.-based solar manufacturers that a flood of cheap foreign-made solar panels is hurting American manufacturing, providing President Donald Trump with an opportunity to impose tariffs.

Friday's unanimous 4-0 decision by the independent, bipartisan commission could turn the U.S. solar industry on its head, including that of Hawaii. In a next step, the ITC will provide its recommendation on how to deal with the issue to the president by Nov. 13.

"While not that much of a surprise, this decision feels like a shot to the head to our local PV industry that’s already dealing with so much," Marco Mangelsdorf, president of Big Island-based ProVision Solar, told PBN in an email. "To think that our fate may rest in the hands of Donald Trump is almost too much for this old solar warrior to bear. Hopefully, whatever remedy the ITC passes on to the president won’t be an industry killer."

35 Years Late: Honolulu Leftist Churches Finally Decide to get Around to Becoming ‘Sanctuaries’

SA: Harris United Methodist Church is one of the first faith congregations in the state to declare itself a sanctuary to protect undocumented immigrants facing deportation.

In April the congregation voted to take on the risks involved in violating federal law….despite “a lot of fear,” and resistance from a few of its members….

Among other activities, Harris members were part of a protest rally at the Department of Homeland Security office on Ala Moana Boulevard in June to prevent the deportation of a Mexican immigrant known just as “Minerva,” Mangayayam said. The church wrote a check to cover a $5,000 bond, raised spontaneously by some 40 supporters there.

Mangayayam in a later interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said the membership in the Nuuanu church includes up to 300, but about 170 regular attendees are “passionate on social justice issues.”….

They plan to set up a “rapid-response network” of people who can help in case the church decides to shelter someone seeking refuge.  (Translation: This is all fake.  Nobody is being given ‘sanctuary here.)….

Church of the Crossroads, a United Church of Christ congregation heavily involved in J20+ activities, is in the process of declaring itself a sanctuary church, according to organizer John Kawamoto, who belongs to both groups. St. Mary of Moiliili Episcopal Church pastor Gregory Johnson has also expressed interest, among others. (Translation: Even less than nothing.)

Reality: The first Sanctuary Churches were in the early 1980s.
