Caldwell’s Darby Flood: 15 Homes Uninhabitable, 110 Damaged in Kalihi

KHON: It’s a slow road to recovery for the flood victims in Kalihi, despite the generosity of the community.

Much of the mud has been cleaned out of the homes, but it could still take weeks before they can move back in. Walls and floors will have to be removed to sanitize the units.

(This happened because the Caldwell Administration, Dep’t of Facility Maintenance, failed to clean out overgrowth and refuse from Kalihi Stream before storm season.)

Hawaii Red Cross volunteers checked back with the families Friday to provide additional help. The organization is also assessing the overall damage done by the storm.

So far, 110 homes were affected and 15 of them were extremely damaged.

The families on Umi Street were among those who got the worst damage from Sunday’s storm, and in some cases, they’re not just dealing with the physical recovery, but the emotional one.

The Manini family took cell phone video of Kalihi Stream as raging waters overflowed into their home. They consider themselves lucky because they were able to save some of their belongings, but they still need to move out when all the damaged homes are gutted.

Convert Rail to Busway?

HNN: During the forum, Djou said, "You can have a bus that runs from Waianae all the way on to the University of Hawaii, not needing to change buses, use the existing guideway, and that gets people from A to B."

He then clarified, "What we're talking about is converting this whole system to a bus rapid transit system so that somebody can take one bus, one bus -- from Waianae all the way on to Kapolei. Then put an on-ramp there in Kapolei and they can go grade separated using the existing guideway. Then on the same bus take it all the way in to the University of Hawaii. That's what we're doing. It's not an ideal solution, but it is something that will get us our transportation solution."

Djou: Poor Zoning Blocks Affordable Housing

HNN: Former Congressman Charles Djou says the lack of affordable housing on Oahu is partially a problem of land availability on a small island, but more an issue of zoning.

"If you look at the McCully-Moiliili area we have lots and lots of low-rises -- two-story and three-story low-rises -- that could easily accommodate more housing stock if it went from a two or three-story to ten or twelve or fifteen story housing stock," he told Hawaii News Now. "

"That's one easy way of finding additional ways to add housing units so that we have affordable housing for our community without having to pave over all of our beautiful Native Hawaiian landscape."

Enviros Attempt to Force Fishermen out of Papahanaumokuakea discussion

CB: An environmental group has filed a complaint with federal officials over Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council Executive Director Kitty Simonds’ role in orchestrating opposition to the proposed expansion of the marine monument around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Marjorie Ziegler, executive director of the Conservation Council for Hawaii, says Simonds is providing “the advocacy and the lobbying campaign” against the proposal to expand Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

“It’s totally inappropriate for Kitty Simonds in her official capacity as executive director of Wespac – a federally funded entity – to play such a prominent role in an aggressive lobbying effort to generate public and political opposition to the proposed expansion,” Ziegler said Friday in an interview.  (But its OK for OHA to be involved.)

Mainland Lesbians Score $80K

CB: … According to the lawsuit brought by California tourists Courtney Wilson and Taylor Guerrero, they were walking through the aisles of a Foodland store when Officer Bobby Harrison “observed their consensual romantic contact and, in a loud voice, ordered plaintiffs to stop and ‘take it somewhere else,’” the Associated Press reported.

After Harrison observed them kissing again, he and the women got into a physical altercation, the lawsuit said. Wilson and Guerrero were arrested and spent three days in jail on suspicion of felony assault of an officer, according to the Associated Press….

Bisexual Charged with Murder, Kiddie Porn, Prostitution

SA: The child pornography and prostitution accusations arose during the investigation of the killing.

“He (Walker) was hooking up for sex with people on the internet, Craigslist, women and men,” Bervar said. “Some of the men, he charged them some money — 50, 100 bucks.”

DNC Finger Flipper Works for Gary Hooser

KE: Turns out little Miss No Class with her finger in the air, Chelsea Lyon Kent, the woman who experienced brief notoriety flipping the bird at the DNC, works for none other than Councilman Gary “Bite Me” Hooser.

My, my. Birds of a feather do flock together.

But it's just a total coincidence that Kent and Baby Hoos (Dylan), were standing right next to each other on the DNC floor, and giggling about her cheap stunt. Uh huh.

Curious, how the Hooser men seem unable to take any responsibility for their behavior, or their associates.

Which leads us to Daddy Hooser's pal over on Maui, Rep. Kaniela Ing….

KGI: “No one is upset about what I did.”
