"The fix is in" for Honolulu Police Chief

The commission-appointed selection committee ... presented its list of the top four finalists to the commission on Wednesday. The four are HPD Capt. Louis Kealoha of the Juvenile Services Division and HPD Acting Chief Paul Putzulu, along with Commander Gary Yamashiroya of the Chicago Police Department and Commander Harry Markley of the Phoenix Police Department.

Camp acknowledged when it came to light that the two were added, rumors ran rampant within the department, causing some to speculate the selection process may have been manipulated to include the mayor's choice for police chief. The mayor, who ap- pointed the police commissioners, was traveling to Manila and unavailable for comment yesterday.

Camp said she received "a lot of calls from the selection committee members that they were upset that there was a perception there was a fix in."

Camp blamed the commission's executive director for calling, without her OK, those who did not make what he thought was the final four on the committee list. She summed it up as a gaffe in communication.

2 quit Honolulu police chief selection panel when commission expands list of finalists to 6

ADV version gets to the point: Two members of a police chief selection committee tendered resignations to the Honolulu Police Commission after learning that the commission had chosen to name six people as finalists rather than four as the committee had recommended.

Names added: Assistant Chief Debora Tandal, Assistant Chief Delbert Tatsuyama

(Speculation is that Mufi wants to shore up female voting support by naming Tandal...But given the history within the HPD, it is hard to believe that is all that is at work here.)

Negotiations over teacher furloughs prove pointless

HONOLULU - Twin lawsuits filed by parents seeking to halt Hawaii's teacher furloughs face a pivotal federal court hearing after settlement negotiations foundered this week.

One of the lawyers representing the parents, Eric Seitz, said Monday's hearing could be raucous.

This week, U.S. District Judge David Ezra held settlement talks with state lawyers. Seitz and Carl Varady, who represents eight special education students and their parents, said Ezra told them Thursday that no out-of-court resolution was forthcoming.

Ezra is acting as a special master overseeing the settlement talks.

Varady said he and Seitz will on Monday seek a preliminary injunction halting further teacher furloughs until a trial can be held.

Senate to grill DOE on stimulus

House Speaker Calvin Say joined state education officials and Gov. Linda Lingle in calling for a reopening of the Hawaii State Teachers Association contract to renegotiate terms to restore furlough days.

In a written statement, HSTA President Wil Okabe said the union was "not opposed" to renegotiating the contract. "However, we are perplexed by the calls for HSTA to reopen the contract and renegotiate the terms without any viable options being proposed."

(That's right, using "professional development" days is not a "viable option" only tax increases and raids on special funds would be "viable" because the HSTA/DoE 17-Friday strike is just a management/labor ploy to force a tax increase.)

Honolulu Symphony broke, ends season

Citing mounting debts and lackluster revenues, the Honolulu Symphony said it will file for bankruptcy protection and may lay off half of its musicians. The 109-year-old symphony, which bills itself as the oldest American orchestra west of the Rockies, said it will cancel all of its November and December concerts and made no guarantees that the rest of its 2009-10 season would go on.

From the comments: This has got to be one of the most hypocritical editorials ever to appear in the Star Bulletin. The reason nobody questions radical Muslims like Hasan is because liberal elitists like the Star Bulletin editorial writers have made us a nation obsessed with being politically correct. Had Hasan been questioned or investigated those same liberals would be screaming about "racial profiling" and "religious intolerance."

But look on the bright side: The Star-Bulletin is losing money every day....
